The Mars helicopter makes history – with maxon precision motors

Space fans are thrilled: NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has successfully completed its pioneering flight on Mars. This is the first time in the history of powered, unmanned spaceflight that a device has flown in a controlled manner on another planet – also thanks to DC motors that have been modified for this challenge.

Dunkermotoren integrates certified PROFINET with PROFIdrive in servo motor

Since the end of February 2021, Dunkermotoren’s fully integrated PROFINET solution has been officially certified by the PROFIBUS user organization. This means another important feature is fully integrated into the motor, which is a milestone in terms of cabling, commissioning and IIoT capability.

maxon congratulates on the successful Mars landing of the Perseverance Rover

Great success for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL): The rover Perseverance landed in the Jezero Crater on Mars on February 18. Several electric drives from maxon are used in the ambitious mission – among other things, when the helicopter brought along takes off for its first flight.

maxon drives are heading to the Red Planet with NASA’s Perseverance rover

Perseverance will touch down on Mars on Thursday, February 18, 2021. In July 2020, NASA´s fifth rover started the journey to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.
